Online Cloud Storage. GotBackup Review
Written on the 8 July 2016 by Charles AllenIs your PC, laptop, Ipad or mobile device protected from a hard drive crash? In 2011 7% of consumers used online cloud storage to protect their valuable documents and priceless pictures. By the end of 2015, its predicted that over 36% of consumers will use online cloud storage to protect their data.
1. What is Online Cloud Storage?
Online Cloud Storage is simply the storage of data, whether computer documents, files, photos or videos, . This storage is completely online, in multiple data centers, that make up the term "cloud". The online storage is not limited to computers. You can also store ipads, smart phone devices, or other electronic devices that contain photos, videos, or documents.
2. What are the Benefits of Online Cloud Storage?
The biggest and most signifcant benefit is being able to access files easily from any location with an internet connection. In the early internet years, being able to access files online didn't exist. Most computer backups were done with a hard drive disk attached to the computer. As you can see by the statistics in 2011, only 7% of computer users took advantage of online storage.
Combining the easy of accessibility of files, along with the advantage of being able to share files with another person in a remote location, the popularity of online storage is booming.
3. What are the Disadvantages of Online Cloud Storage?
Unfortunately, the biggest disadvantage to cloud storage is that users are limited by bandwidth. Bandwidth is simply the amount of storage space available. If you have a slow internet connection, you might have problems accessing or sharing your files. Organizations or companies that require a large amount of storage may also find costs increase significantly after the first few gigabytes of data stored.
4. As a personal user how much storage space do I need?
Today, the average computer has a 200 GB hard drive. Online storage companies provide free storage from 2 to 5 GB. All storage above the allowed free limit come with an immediate monthly surcharge.
The most popular companies include Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive.
However, recently launched online storage company,GotBackup, provides unlimited online storage starting at $7.99/monthly. The Backup & Share plan allows syncing with other computers with unlimited backup for $11.99/monthly. The Family Plan allows up to 5 separate computers or devices with unlimited storage for each device for only $12.99/monthly.
GotBackup is a subsidiary of GVO, or Global Virtual Opportunites, a web hosting company, co-founded by CEO Joel Therein. A highly successful multi-million dollar company located in San Antonio, Texas.
5. Does the equipment that GotBackup use insure that my data is secure and encrypted?
This information is taken directly from the GotBackup.com website. It reads, and I quote, "GotBackup employs a military grade AES-256 encryption keeping your files safe and secure. When you send data to and from any web server on the internet it bounces off a number of other servers on its way. "
"The further away from the web server you are, the more bounces it makes: for example if you are in New York, USA and you're accessing a server in Beijing, China, your data may go through your ISP in New York, a New York broadband hub, an exchange in Europe, an exchange in Hong Kong, an ISP in Beijing and then eventually the target web server. All of these servers are processing at least some of your data, and some of the servers (e.g. your ISP) are processing all of it. Intercepting your data along this journey is pretty hard to do, but it is possible."
"For most data, this doesn't matter - if someone intercepts your shopping list then it's probably not going to concern you a great deal. However for some data such as sensitive financial or commercial information, it does matter, and you want to make sure that the data is as secure as possible".
"This is where encryption comes in: both you and the target web server can secretly agree on a way to encrypt your data, and then your PC encrypts it before it is sent across the open internet. Anyone intercepting that data would just get meaningless nonsense that is impossible to read - only the target website would actually know what it means."
6. Does GotBackup work on both Windows and Mac?
Yes. GotBackup works on both the Windows and Mac platform, but not Linux.
GotBackup is easy to setup and use. Practically set and forget. The GotBackup software checks for new data every 5 minutes, so your backups are almost live to the minute. If you PC or mobile device is lost or stolen, you can retrieve the data from anywhere with an internet connection.
